Christmas time is always a great time to relax and take some days off in between Christmas and New Year. In order to make the most of our free days, we planned a short trip to Graz for the weekend..
WHY VISIT GRAZ?
Being the second largest city in Austria, Graz is the capital of Steiermark (one of the 9 provinces of Austria). Besides, Graz has 6 universities which is why the city is called “The University Town”. However, not everything is just education in Graz…in fact, since 1999 it belongs to the UNESCO´s “World Heritage Cultural Sites” list. So, with this rich background Graz sounded like a perfect option for our weekend trip!
Although our original idea was to spend 3 full days there, we found that 2 days were enough to visit some of the “must-sees” and to take a glance at this culturally-rich city. The best of all: we enjoyed some sunny days! 🙂
BEST PLACES TO VISIT:
1- Schloßberg: a fortress with great views of the city of Graz and the Uhrturm. We went up on foot, but if climbing is not for you, then the funicular may be the best choice.
TIP: Go there to watch the sunset and have a Coffee a the romantic Cafe on top 🙂
2- The picturesque Innere Stadt (the old city centre) invites visitors to go for a pleasant walk across its narrow little streets and to discover its lovely architecture. The Hauptplatz is very nice.
TIP: Go there by day and night. The atmosphere is totally different!
3- Landhaushof: the home of the Steiermark Parliament. It has an impressive inner courtyard which displays renaissance architecture. As it was December, we were lucky to see the typical ice manger.
4- Burgruine Gösting: Great choice for hiking lovers like us. The walk to the ruins takes around 25 minutes with a slight slope that turns strenuous from time to time- nothing that a cold beer at the nice tavern at the top could not make up for 😉 – The great views from Graz and the interesting Castle Ruins create a remarkable experience.
4- Domkirche is definitely is a must see for church lovers. It doesn´t look so impressive from the outside, but the baroque interior is quite extraordinary.
5- Schloß Eggenberg: We enjoyed our visit through the charming gardens and took some pictures from the outside.
I hope you enjoy the pictures!
